Punch Fear in the Face

brand-as-business bit:  “It’s time to punch fear in the face. It’s time to escape average. It’s time to do work that matters. It’s time to start.

Someone who issues statements like these is my kind of person!!  And that’s why I was thrilled to hear that someone, Jon Acuff, speak recently.

Jon’s the guy behind the hilarious and hopeful blog, StuffChristiansLike.net,  and the author of the best-selling book, Quitter, Closing The Gap Between Your Day Job & Your Dream Job.

Here are a few of the choice words Jon shared at Southwest Michigan First’s Catalyst 2013 conference.  (Jon actually took the stage right after my presentation on What Great Brands Do.  I’m glad he went after me, as I don’t think I could have followed such an inspirational talk – note to self, don’t follow animals, children, and Jon Acuff!)

  • Don’t buy the lie that you have to be ready – no one is ever ready.  Start before you’re ready.”  This reminds me that feeling confident isn’t a prerequisite to doing something; it’s the result of doing it.
  • When people tell you that you can’t do something, they’re predicting a future they can’t control.”  This reminds me how unimportant it is what other people think of me.
  • Hate only gets loud when you do things that matter.”  This reminds me that I should be doing things that matter – and when I do, I should ignore the critics.
