what got you there won’t get you here
brand-as-business bit: For quite awhile now, I’ve been wanting to write a bit with this title, “What Got You There Won’t Get You Here.” It’s a twist on the title of Marshall Goldsmith‘s best selling book, “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.” Goldsmith’s premise is that our previous successes often prevent us from achieving more success because the very skills, temperament, and habits that we learned as we climbed the corporate ladder (what got us here) are not those that enable us to be effective once we get to the top (what will get us there — further success).
My corollary to Goldsmith’s point is that sometimes what led someone to be successful in one situation (there) may be entirely different from what is needed in a new one (here.) And that’s exactly why Ron Johnson hasn’t been able to replicate at JC Penney the past successes he experienced at Target and Apple. I’ve come across two pieces that explain this extremely well:
