In a former job, we used free shipping sporadically, and it averaged about $25 per order. However, at other times, we offered % off or other valuable stuff worth $25 or more, but free shipping somehow always drove the most business. I don't think people think of it in terms of "Wow, I'm saving $25," but rather, "Great - that's just one more thing I don't have to pay for."

hey folks -- I found an Internet Retailer article on the topic of free shipping that I thought would provide an interesting context for this post --
http://www.internetretailer.com/dailyNews.asp?id=28478 --
two highlights from the article:

61 of the largest 100 online retailers offered free shipping as of the week of Monday, Nov. 10, though nearly all tied it to conditions such as minimum order value, type of product or a limited time period, according to a survey conducted this week by Internet Retailer.

The following online retailers among the top 100 showed no free shipping offers:
QVC
Wal-Mart (only offers free shipping to stores)
J.C. Penney
CompUSA
Macy’s/Bloomingdale’s
Overstock
Avon
Buy.com
PC Connection
Blockbuster
J. Crew
Foot Locker
Coldwater Creek
Abercrombrie & Fitch
FTD Group
FreshDirect
PCMall
Harry and David
Hanover Direct
American Girl
